Immortals After Dark Series Book 2
Review
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
So I finally read the first book in Cole’s Immortal’s After Dark series and boy does it clear a few things up. Although you can read the books in any particular order and still understand what is going on, it certainly helps to read the first one at some point. A lot of the mythology is established and explained in this book and I had quite a few moments of thinking…ah, so that’s why…
In this novel, the relationship is between a Lykae, Lachlain (the king of the Lykaes actually) who has been imprisoned for centuries and tortured daily by the vampire Horde and a Vampire/Valkyrie, Emmaline, who has been raised to be fearful and is supremely overprotected. Lachlain scents his mate and does what he needs to do to escape his confinement to get to her. There is a lot of miscommunication, as usual, which leads to much passion building and much dissatisfaction for the hero. Emma struggles find her inner strength and discovers that she is a kick-ass girl after all. As with all of Cole’s novels, the women get themselves out of dangerous situations without the help of the hero which is nice and very empowering.
This particular novel though is not my favourite for a few reasons. For one, I found the sexual aggression at the beginning to almost mimic attempted rape. Although nothing really bad happens, like actual forced penetration, it made me squirm to read…Emma asserts herself but it’s the intention of Lachlain that kind of irks me a little. His aggression and anger make him contemplate actions I was uncomfortable with...and then there was the scene where he actually performs a sexual act on Emma while she is sleeping...yikes...that it not cool! I realize that he has been held captive and tortured for a long time but he’s really kind of a dick at the start and Cole really lays it on thick…so thick in fact that I kind of tainted my opinion of him for the rest of the book. Which is my other problem…I didn’t connect with Lachlain and I really didn’t care whether or not he got the girl in the end.
Otherwise, it was enjoyable; I really liked Emma a lot. I would say quite necessary to read if you want to completely understand the series.
Summary
A fierce werewolf and a bewitching vampire become unlikely soul mates whose passion will test the boundaries of life and death.
After enduring years of torture from the vampire horde, Lachlain MacRieve, leader of the Lykae Clan, is enraged to find the predestined mate he’s waited millennia for is a vampire. Or partly one. Emmaline Troy is a small, ethereal half Valkyrie/half vampire, who somehow begins to soothe the fury burning within him.
Sheltered Emmaline finally sets out to uncover the truth about her deceased parents—until a powerful Lykae claims her as his mate and forces her back to his ancestral Scottish castle. There, her fear of the Lykae—and their notorious dark desires—ebbs as he begins a slow, wicked seduction to sate her own dark cravings.
Yet when an ancient evil from her past resurfaces, will their desire deepen into a love that can bring a proud warrior to his knees and turn a gentle beauty into the fighter she was born to be?
