Review

This is my first time ever reading a novel published by the Harlequin imprint Silhouette Nocturne. I won’t say it’s the last because I probably will pick up another one sometime in the future. It wasn’t terrible, but it wasn’t…well, it wasn’t very exciting. The writing was good, only found one typo, and the characters were interesting. The plot was acceptable but the sex scenes were dreary and rather boring. I felt like I was being fast forwarded through them with blinders on my eyes. I was surprised by this actually because I assumed that this imprint was more of the spicy variety, at least that’s what I had gathered from the publisher’s web site. I was expecting darker, sexier and much more exciting. Now, I will say that I realize I’ve only read one and I should give another book at try, maybe it’s just this author or something but really, when you advertise that an imprint is edgier, I would expect the novels to be, well, to be edgy.

Back to Life by Linda O. Johnston

Instead we are presented with a romantic relationship that is love, love, love gushing with the usual and totally expected relationship misunderstanding, which in this case is the link to paranormal which the imprint claims is a focal point in the books. At no point was I stressed about the relationship, it was very clear that things would end well; I didn’t feel like my emotions had to work for the happily ever after because it was as clear as day that it would happen. Heroine, Skye (I have to say, hate the name, almost so different that it’s cliché) is a K9 officer and a Valkyrie, a being who can decide life or death for a victim who is on the verge of crossing over. She saves the life of Trevor Owens, SWAT team member, whose life is connected to her in some way…any guesses why? Anyone? Anyone? Anyway, they team up to capture two serial killers and in the process have censored sex and fall in love.

I’m not big on the police novels but this one wasn’t totally boring, although it kind of bordered on excessive detail and I found myself wondering if author did so much research that she needed to add every possible detail she could, that or, perhaps she is a cop herself, which would also explain it.

Summary

From the second she reaches for his hand, Skye Rydell feels compelled to save the SWAT officer from the brink of death. Skye senses Trevor has something more to accomplish in life. Something disquieting. Important. Something involving her. Skye makes a split-second decision and, with her choice to use her Valkyrie powers to bring Trevor back to life, everything changes. For her act causes her to accidentally impart her deadly powers to Trevor…. And now, with a murderer hot on their heels, Trevor must grapple with his new gift, his fierce desire for Skye—and a monumental decision that will put all that he holds most dear on the line!
