Review

I frequent the bargain section of my local bookstore and it is here that I found Spellbinder for a very reasonable price. When I read the prologue I almost put the book down. It was very confusing. I didn’t know what was going on, who was being attacked and why…it wasn’t a very good start and it didn’t hint at a very believable or successful world building introduction. Starting in the middle of the action can backfire at times if things are a little too complicated. Luckily though, I didn’t put it down; I had nothing else to read and I was bored so I kept going. That sounds bad, I know, but what I’m getting at is that I’m glad I did push through. It ended up being a great read.

Spellbinder by Melanie Rawn

There’s just enough of everything in this novel. A great plot, very exciting, a love story, complete with a stressful separation and reunion, and amazing characters. I know I’ve finished a great book when I can’t stop thinking about the characters. Sometimes I find myself making friends with the characters and I don’t really want to stop reading about them. That sounds psychotic I’m sure but I know there are other readers out there who experience the same thing as I do. That’s the way I felt with this book, the characters stayed with me, enough to make me give it another read. (The second time around the prologue made perfect sense.) I’d love to see these characters pop up again in another tale. The world that Rawn creates for her witches is believable and set, very realistically, in the human world.  I’m not very interested in sci-fi or fantasy (the kind with dragons and whatnot) and when I saw that this was a TOR book that is exactly what I thought I was in for, but I was wrong. It is well worth the time, as long as you can get past the prologue, it all gets explained in the end, you just have to commit to it and read through the confusing start. I’m glad I did.

Spellbinder Summary

There is magic in the big city…literally. New York City has a small, and by preference discrete, population of witches and wizards who live and love and go dancing just like everyone else. Holly McClure is one of them, a successful writer who tries to ignore her heritage, except when the local Magistrate needs her special gift in his coven. Holly is far more interested in Evan Lachlan, the handsome federal marshal who works with her best friend, assistant district attorney Susannah Wingfield.

But trouble is coming to the City in the form of a black coven run by a murderous psychopath, and deputy marshals and ADAs are powerless to deal with that kind of crime. The danger to Holly is extreme, for her special gift is the power of her blood to strengthen and bind any spell, for good or for evil. Holly's passionate love affair will be derailed by those who want to drain her for their own purposes. In the end it will be magic against magic, and Holly McClure will have to risk all for life and love.
