Review

So I have to say right off the top that the concept of this book is weird. The hero is a unicorn turned human named Ash. He says things like, where is your tail, when speaking to the heroine, whose name is Mariah. There is horse imagery and mannerisms referred to that are odd when describing a human. Overall, very much a good and interesting fantasy, kind of an icky, strange romance. It was different, let’s just say that.

Ash, the once king of the unicorns has been condemned to the human world, confined in a small prison by Lord Donnington. Unicorns, although super powerful, can be controlled by the will of a virgin and our heroine, Mariah Donnington is just that. Abandoned on her wedding night, without consummating her marriage, she is left on her own and chooses to spend her time strolling the vast property of her husband’s estate. She discovers Ash imprisoned with little understanding of language, manners or clothing. Being the compassionate girl that she is, she vows to help him and hopes to find out why her husband has chained up another human with little apparent reason.

Lord of Legends by Susan Krinard

I don’t want to give anything away but there is much scandal, meaning people are having a lot of sex that shouldn’t be having sex. There is betrayal, a soothsayer, a prediction, an evil mother –in-law and an insane, lust driven competitor for Mariah’s husband’s affections. There’s a witch and fairies and of course, unicorns. The plot had some great areas of tension and I did get through the novel quickly but the end had a lot of loose ends to tie up and probably could have been simplified a little more because some of the scenes seemed strange and not properly explained.

Summary

He is Arion, King of the Unicorns. Powerful, seductive, he could possess any female he desired—until now. He is condemned to live as a man, and it is only the enchanting Lady Mariah Donnington's innocence that can release him from his curse.

Abandoned on her wedding night, frightened of her hidden, otherworldly heritage, Mariah is instinctively drawn to the mysterious stranger she discovers imprisoned on her husband's estate. But as the secret of Arion's magical identity unfolds, their friendship burns into a passion that cannot, must not, be consummated. For to do so would destroy them both.
